An original logo for the non-profit coffee shop The Well. Located in Nashville, Tennessee, The Well (opening Summer 2012) will give away all profits to fulfill its mission of providing clean water and other resources to the world’s underserved.

For more information please visit www.wellcoffeehouse.org.

As with all my logos this one started with a sketch. Once it is semi-finalized I transfer it to Adobe Illustrator and begin working on the digital version. With plenty of patience and prayer I’m always thankful to see a final product like this one.

Creative work is difficult. But if you allow yourself time and effort for original ideas, then actually spend the time (say, a year) to make the idea become reality, you could end up with a very, very cool stop motion video featuring a boat load of jelly beans.

Above is how they made the video (In Your Arms by Kina Grannis). The final product can be seen here.

I recently established two new websites for non-profit organizations. The first was for The Barnabas Vision. The second was a redesign for Borodash, a charity race in Middle Tennessee.

Discounts are given to non-profits for all design work. In the case of Borodash, I donate nearly all services (web and print design as well as general consulting work) as a race sponsor. Similar services are available to your organization, especially if your services are humanitarian in their mission.

Wakham family logo and identity. This logo was used on a website (hosted by Brian Holaway ...

Wakham family logo and identity. This logo was used on a website (hosted by Brian Holaway Creative) as well as a t-shirt design for the entire family.

After a quick meeting to discuss color options and overall concepts of the logo I sketched out my idea on graph paper. Once the general idea was in place I transferred it to Adobe Illustrator. My preference is to get the final version as close as possible on graph paper. Most of the time it’s easier for me to erase and re-sketch and color on paper than on screen. That’s just me.

And using Illustrator’s graph view I can transfer the design almost exactly – by eye. Yes, I look at the paper and replicate it on screen click by click. Sometimes I use reference images on-screen, as well.

Once the outline is done I color it based on either mine or my client’s wishes (this time it was their color choice). Every other item for the family (the Wish Team) should start to incorporate the dandelion in some way.

For example, the back of the t-shirt shows a verse from Psalms, but instead of just putting text I added a few dandelion seeds. A simple addition, but one that adds a little personality, in my opinion.

Science does not know its debt to imagination.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, in Poetry and Imagination (1872). Emerson (May 25, 1803 – April 27, 1882) was an American essayist, lecturer, and poet, who led the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. He was seen as a champion of individualism and a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society, and he disseminated his thoughts through dozens of published essays and more than 1,500 public lectures across the United States.

Every child is born blessed with a vivid imagination. But just as a muscle grows flabby with disuse, so the bright imagination of a child pales in later years if he ceases to exercise it.

Walt Disney, as quoted in The Quotable Walt Disney (2001).

Walter Elias ”Walt” Disney (December 5, 1901 – December 15, 1966) was an American film producer, director, screenwriter, voice actor, animator, entrepreneur, entertainer, international icon, and philanthropist, well-known for his influence in the field of entertainment during the 20th century. He also made Mickey Mouse.

Ted.com videos have a lot to offer. For one reason or another I was reminded of this speech by J.J. Abrams. It’s well worth watching if you are intrigued by the way things work and not necessarily the why, or if you’re someone who remembers a scene from a movie as one of your favorites of all time while others barely notice it even happened.
